MDR SPUTNIK

Like its predecessor DT64, MDR SPUTNIK played a wide range of contemporary rock and pop music in the early 1990s. With its transformation into a format radio station at the end of the 1990s, the music selection gradually shifted to current chart hits with a preference for R&B, positioning itself as a so-called Contemporary Hit Radio. With another reorientation of the station in December 2006, the musical diversity in the program was significantly expanded. Among other things, special music programs were introduced in the evenings, including formats known from earlier times. The initially still existing share of R&B and rap has now significantly decreased. During the day, the station mainly plays rock, pop, and electropop with an alternative direction.

Through Soundcheck, close collaboration with the German and Austrian music scene is possible. This allows young, unknown bands and music groups without record contracts to be played in the daily program.

In addition to the current on-air program, MDR SPUTNIK offers genre-specific audio streams with program-accompanying club, rock, and black music. The content of these audio streams originates from the on-air special programs and is updated on a weekly basis. Furthermore, the current editions of the programs Insomnia, Soundcheck, Black Beatz, Roboton, and Popkult can be heard in a continuous loop as a stream.
