Der Gothic Rock entstand im Großbritannien der späten 70er-Jahre in den Nachwehen des Punkrocks, aber auch Genres wie Psychedelic Rock oder Glam Rock hatten ihren Einfluss auf den Gothic Rock. Künstler wie Alice Cooper, Bauhausund Joy Division prägten die Entwicklung stark mit.
