Inquiries from people in Southeast Alaska, who wanted a Christian radio station prompted the Central Alaskan Mission (founded by Vince Joy) to conduct survey trips to the communities of Sitka, Wrangell, Petersburg, Juneau and Ketchikan. After several visits to communities along the Inside Passage, the Lord directed them to file for a radio station in the fishing community of Petersburg. On September 25, 1982, the FCC licensed KRSA as a 5,000 watt, directional, commercial AM station serving the island community of Petersburg, the waterways around Petersburg; and by translator, the communities of Haines, Sitka and Wrangell
