Wann genau das Genre Emo aufkam, ist heute schwer zu sagen, da sich die Beschreibung vielmehr den emotionsgeladenen Lyrics, als der musikalischen Ausrichtung widmet. Das spiegelt sich natürlich schon in Namen wider: Emo ist nämlich keine Bezeichnung für irgendwelche Musiktechniken, sondern ganz einfach die Abkürzung für "emotional".
Was wir heute unter dem Begriff verstehen, hat seine Wurzeln aber schon in der Hardcore- und Punkszene der 80er Jahre - harte Musik trifft auf harte Emotionen. Versagensängste, Trauer, Verzweiflung und weitere sehr persönliche Gefühle finden in dem Genre Emo den Einzug in die Lyrics und sorgen so für eine ganz besondere Musik und Verbundenheit zwischen Bands und ihren Fans.
