Online since 1997, WBMX is an honorary inductee into the U.S. Dance Music Hall Of Fame for it's contribution to the world of dance music. This is where house music's life started. House music was an underground club thing until it was heard "in the mix" on WBMX in the early 80's.
While we were a more 'urbam contemporary' station at the time, we started the mixes started in 1981. The Hot Mix 5 were created and they along with guest mixers would be featured on Friday Nights, Saturday Night, Lunch Mixes, 10 O'Clock Mixes, 5 O'clock mixes and more.
The clubs and parties followed what was happening on WBMX and in the mixes where before 'house', DJS were were playing disco remnants, R&B dance oriented tracks and some of the 'punk-out' stuff. B-Boy, HI-NRG and 'Hearthrob' [which turned into 'Freestyle'] began to creep in by 1983.
By 1984, Chicago DJS were beginning to experiment with creating their own music and it was that music, 'house' music' that found its way into the mixes and spread across the city, the suburbs and the world.
House music was taking over the mix show playlists each weekend where over 1 million people would tune in to hear the Hot Mix 5 and guest DJS bringing the hottest club music to the airwaves 'in the mix'.
Early artists like Jamie Principle, Marshall Jefferson, JM Silk, Jesse Saunders, Chip E and more were pumpin' out 'house music' and the world was listening. Their test pressings were spinning at clubs and parties in the city and across the suburbs.
WBMX was the platform that launched 'house music' to the world and we're still here, after all that time.
